In addition to provide the basis for holding a position as a dental assistant, dental hygienist or dentist, the dental hygienist and odontology programmes will give you the opportunity to take up research as an extra activity. This is based on the initiative of the individual student.

The PhD degree programme is a 3-year research training programme during which the PhD student performs supervised research while honouring dissemination and teaching responsibilities. Additionally, PhD students dedicate about half a study year to PhD courses. The degree programme concludes with a PhD thesis. Read more about the PhD degree programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences here.

A master's degree is an entry requirement for anyone wanting to be considered for registration as a PhD student. As a dental hygienist you can achieve a master's degree by supplementing your professional bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. The Master of Public Health is one of the master's degrees that will qualify you to do the PhD programme. Dentist students who want to proceed onto a PhD degree programme after concluding their master's degree programme will benefit from doing a pre-graduate research year during their master's studies. Read more about the Rules on registration as a PhD student.

Additionally, you need to be affiliated with a potential main supervisor and to provide financing of wages and tuition fees. You can read more about the Faculty's research.

If you would like to contact a specific group of researchers, this is best done by contacting the department to which the research group is affiliated. You can read more about Research at the Department of Odontology and about  the graduate programme in odontology.

Scholarships which will allow you to obtain funding for the wages and tuition fees are regularly offered by the Faculty, the Department and by research groups. You may also apply for an industrial PhD scholarship or a scholarship targeting the public sector. The Capital Region of Denmark and Region Zealand and a number of corporations also regularly advertise scholarships. These calls are, among others, published by the Graduate School at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and in the daily press.
